The 2025 challenge encourages participants to develop innovative solutions that utilize generative AI to tackle global challenges such as climate change, equitable access to resources, and social justice. The competition spans multiple qualifying hackathons throughout the year, each focusing on different themes. Winning projects from these hackathons will compete for the Grand Prizes at the end of the year.

How to participate

Register: Sign up for any of the qualifying hackathons listed on the official website.
Develop: Create a new, original solution during the hackathon, utilizing IBM's generative AI technologies, such as
Submit: Provide a technical proof of concept and a 3-minute demo video showcasing your solution.
Compete: Participate in the hackathon, adhering to the specific theme and guidelines provided.

Eligibility

Age: Participants must be at least 18 years old or the age of majority in their jurisdiction.
Team Composition: Teams can consist of up to 5 members.
Residency: Open to individuals worldwide, excluding residents of U.S. embargoed countries.

Prizes

Qualifying Hackathons:
- $5,000 USD per winning team
- 1 conference pass per team member to IBM TechXchange Conference 2025 in
Global Challenge Grand Prizes:
- First Place: $50,000 USD
- Second Place: $20,000 USD
- Third Place: $5,000 USD
- University Grant: $30,000 USD to the top-scoring university team’s school(s)
